Privacy policy
Bargie. Last updated 6 November 2026.
Bargie helps your household plan the weekly shop, find specials, use points and loyalty cards well, and find cheaper fuel. This page explains what we keep, why, who else handles it and how to delete it. We follow the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988.
Who we are
Bargie is run by business or trading name (ABN ABN), state, Australia. In this policy "we" and "us" means us. You can reach us at support@bargie.app. See also our Terms of use.
The short version
- We keep only what the app needs to work: your shopping list, your household settings and what you choose to save.
- We never sell your data, never show ads, and never share it for advertising.
- Your Coles or Woolworths login never reaches us. When you fill your online trolley, you sign in to the store yourself and that login stays on your phone or browser.
- We don't ask for bank logins or card numbers.
- You can export your data or delete your account at any time from the Home tab.
What we keep
- Account: your email address if you sign in with one. You can also use the app as a guest without one.
- Setup answers: state, suburb or postcode, household size, the shops and servos you use, the loyalty programs and card types you have, budget, and how far you'll travel for a saving. These are used to pick your specials and plan your trips.
- What you add: shopping lists, staples, pantry, watchlist, saved meals, points balances, and receipts you scan or forward.
- Alerts: if you turn alerts on, a technical address for your device so we can send them.
- Feedback: what you write in "Send feedback", the screen you were on, and whether you were on a phone or computer.
- Sign-in details: when you sign in, our sign-in provider records the time, your browser type and your IP address. We use these to keep accounts secure and to spot bots and test accounts.
- Plan: whether you have Plus. Plus is free during the beta. When paid plans start, payment is handled by Apple or Google (or the payment provider shown at checkout). We never see your card number, only that a subscription is active.
We don't ask for your name, date of birth, bank logins, card numbers or loyalty card numbers. The "cards" you pick in setup are card types (for example "a Qantas credit card"), not your actual card.
We don't use your phone's GPS location. Distances to shops come from the suburb or postcode you enter.
Photos, receipts and voice
- Photo scan: a photo you take of a receipt, product or cupboard is sent to our AI provider (Anthropic) to read the items, then the photo is discarded. We keep the items it found, not the photo. Anthropic does not use it to train its models.
- Barcodes are read on your phone. If the shops' data doesn't know the product, the barcode number (nothing else) is looked up on Open Food Facts.
- Forwarded eReceipts arrive through our email provider (Resend) and are saved to your account so the app can read them.
- Voice add: your phone's or browser's own speech service turns what you say into text (Apple on iPhone, Google on Android and in Chrome). We only receive the text, and we don't keep recordings.
Why we use it
- To run the app for you: your list, your specials, your trips, your points and fuel suggestions.
- To sign you in, keep your account secure and stop misuse.
- To fix crashes and make the app easier to use, using the crash reports and usage stats described below.
- To answer feedback and support requests, and to tell you about important changes.
We don't use your data for advertising, we don't sell it, and we don't use it to make decisions about you that have legal or similar effects.
Who can see your account
Only you, and the members of a household you join (see below). The person who runs Bargie has an admin page that shows each account's email, sign-up date, last activity, browser type, plan, household and how many list items and feedback notes it has. It is used for support and to block abuse, and is protected so only that person can open it. It doesn't show your list contents, points balances or cards.
Who else handles data
Each service gets only what its job needs.
- Supabase (Singapore): database and sign-in. Holds what's listed under "What we keep".
- Vercel (global): hosts the app. Sees normal web request details like IP address and device type.
- Anthropic (USA): reads the photos you choose to scan. It also writes our weekly recipes, which uses nothing about you.
- Resend (USA): sends sign-in emails and receives receipts you forward. Sees your email address and those emails.
- Sentry (USA): crash reports. Sees the error and device type, with names, emails and typed text removed.
- PostHog (USA): usage stats, so we can see where people get stuck. Sees screen names and taps, and screen recordings with all text hidden (never on Wallet or setup). You can switch it off on the Home tab.
- Open Food Facts (France): product details for a barcode. Sees the barcode number only.
- OpenFreeMap (EU): the map of shops and servos. Sees your IP address and the area shown.
- OpenStreetMap (UK/EU): finds shops near a postcode. Gets the postcode, either from our server or straight from your device (with your IP address). Never your name or email.
- jsDelivr (global): delivers the map and usage-stats code to your device. Sees your IP address.
- Push services (Google, Apple or Mozilla): deliver alerts you turn on. See a device address and the alert text.
- Apple App Store and Google Play: install the phone app and, later, take Plus payments. We only learn whether Plus is active.
Several of these services are overseas, so your data may be stored or handled in the countries listed. We pick providers with strong security and privacy commitments and only send them what their job needs. By using the app you consent to this overseas handling.
Fuel prices come from Service Victoria's Servo Saver and specials from public catalogue data. We send them nothing about you.
Shared households
If you join a household, its members see the shared list, staples and pantry. Your points balances, cards and account details stay yours.
Links to shops
Product links open the shop's own site or app. We always show the cheapest honest option. We don't earn commission on any link today. If we ever use affiliate links, we'll say so here and next to the link, and it will never change which option we recommend.
How long we keep it
We keep your data while you have an account. Crash reports are deleted after 30 days and usage stats after one year. If you delete your account, everything saved under it is deleted straight away. Backups roll off within 7 days.
Security
Data is sent over encrypted connections and stored with database rules that only let your account (and your household, for shared items) read it. No system is perfect: if a data breach is likely to cause you serious harm, we'll tell you and the OAIC as the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme requires.
Your choices
- Export: Home tab, "Export my data".
- Delete: Home tab, "Delete my account". This removes your account and everything saved in it, including feedback. A shared household carries on for its other members. You can also ask us by email, even without the app: see Delete your account.
- See or correct: most of what we hold you can see and change in the app. For anything else, email us and we'll give you a copy or correct it.
- Usage stats: switch them off on the Home tab. "Do Not Track" in your browser is respected too.
- Alerts, camera and microphone are only used after you allow them, and you can turn them off in your phone settings.
Children
The app is meant for adults running a household and isn't directed at children under 16.
Contact and complaints
Questions, corrections or complaints: use "Send feedback" on the Home tab, or email support@bargie.app. We'll reply within 30 days. If you're not happy with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Changes
If we change how we use your data, we'll update this page and tell you in the app before the change takes effect.
